At the beginning of the semester we were tasked with creating a quick 1 slide pitch to convey our honours project concept. Initially, over the course of the summer I knew I wanted to create something heavily inspired by Firewatch but after watching Stranger Things I started to go down a darker route. Instead, I now aim to create a game which can be described as Gone Home meets Stranger Things.
Within this game I aim to convey that sense of nostalgia that Stranger Things manages to create, even to someone like I who was not born until 1995. This game will be set in a 90's school in which the player embodies a student reporter who will be working alone after school. This student will be introduced to the world of the supernatural through an entity who is trapped within technology within the school. The player will be tasked with unearthing this mystery so that they can help free this lost spirit.
The gameplay will be inspired by Gone Home and Firewatch where the narrative will be conveyed to the player through interactive objects; the player will be able to pick up notes and objects and inspect them whilst revealing the narrative behind them through the character’s thoughts. The player will also be able to communicate to the character that will be trapped within technology, the player will be able to have conversations through branching narratives, the player will be voice acted whilst the other character will respond through text. I aim to create a deep bond between the player and the non-player character, a friendship similar to that found within Life is Strange.
