Respire was designed and developed in under 48 hours as part of the Global Game Jam 2015 in response to the theme: ‘What Do We Do Now?’ Respire is an experimental narrative driven video game in which players take the role of a lone astronaut attempting to stabilise their spacecraft after a fatal collision with a meteorite. The player is given a chain of commands by ground control - voice acted by the MacBooks built in text to speech program – this instructs the player as to what they need to do to activate the backup supply of oxygen. Our aim was to convey the theme of ‘What Do We Do Now?’ in a literal sense – making the player often think what should they do next until the impending end of the game where the player is faced with the realisation that in fact there is nothing they can do to survive.
My role in this project was heavily split between both design and art; I created the overall level design of the space craft and co-created the script. Whilst also modelling and texturing 3D assets at a rapid pace, I was also tasked with recording and editing the voice overs.
