Collaboration With: Abertay University, Poppyscotland and Pocket Sized Hands
This project explores how game design and immersive technology can be used to enhance existing historical research and expand narratives to bring rich expansive experiences to hard-to-reach audiences. Their Memory is a Virtual Reality experience where the player embodies a veteran working within the Poppyscotland factory. The player is placed in a virtual version of the factory where they can sit down at three desks and experience the memories of three different veterans. The player can use the motion controllers to pick up the memorabilia on their desk, doing so will trigger an audio clip related to the object.
My role in this project involved the overall design of the experience, the level design - from the original grey blockmesh of the environment to dressing the set. I worked with the actual veterans that create the poppies in the Poppyscotland factory to select and record their memories for the prototype, I was also responsible for modelling the modular environment art such as architectural models in the scene and then texturing the assets using Substance Designer. I created the core gameplay prototype framework in Blueprints. Towards the end of the project I was tasked with managing the freelance artists, sound designer and the team at Pocket Sized Hands while communicating with our project stakeholders at Poppyscotland.
